April Female Athlete Spotlight - Becca Ludwig

When did you start CrossFitting? Who/what got you started?I started Cross fit in October of 2016. I saw a facebook flyer and thought that it sounded fun, so I came and fell in love with the workouts and the people. What is your favorite/least favorite WOD?Favorite WOD probably is MERPH or anything that involves running and is longer than 20 min. What is your favorite/least favorite movement?Jump rope and handstands are probably my least favorite. Back squats are probably my favorite barbell movement, but I like the assault bike and running as well 😊Tell us a little bit about yourself (family, job, sports, interests, etc.)I am a professional student. I am working on my PhD in rehabilitative science and I specifically study insomnia in the concussion population. My formal training is in occupational therapy. I enjoy reading books for fun, rock climbing, and traveling. I have a cat and his name is Sarco (short for a sarcomere which is a muscle cell, it is also the Latin root for muscle). What was your workout routine before CrossFit?Prior to doing CF I ran a lot of “junk miles” in prep for road races. What did you think after your first CrossFit workout?Totally was ready for more! I loved the challenge of the first workout. What were your goals when joining CrossFit? Have you achieved any of those goals?I wanted to become a better runner, so I thought I needed to start strength training. I found out that I had REALLY bad mobility which limited my ability to lift anything properly. Through doing cross fit I have gained muscle mass, but I have also gained flexibility and better body mechanics.

Has CrossFit affected your life outside the gym?It is interesting how much I get done in 10 minutes time because I can have a WOD done in 10 minutes. My focus, discipline ,and time management is so different.Do you have any other special memories/ achievements during your time here?I feel like my biggest achievement is getting my back squat below parallel. When I first started I only went down two inches….. small progress leads to big gains! What advice would you give to a newbie just joining CrossFit 913?Don’t give up on yourself. CrossFit is about making yourself better than yesterday. Everyone starts somewhere with different areas of strength and weakness. Something you might not know about me is?I follow Iowa State football and basketball. Go Cyclones!
