May Female Member Spotlight - Mary Seals

Mary Seals Athlete Spotlight

When did you start CrossFitting? Who/what got you started? I started CrossFit in 2012. I have been doing this for 5 years; that just made me realize I should be a lot better at Crossfit than I am ☺. Tyler had been doing it for a few months and really enjoyed it so I started with him once Chloe started pre-school.What is your favorite/least favorite WOD? My favorite is Fight Gone Bad. My least favorite is Fran – because you know…Pull-ups! What is your favorite/least favorite movement? My favorite movement is OHS’s or Snatches. Least favorite is Toe-2-Bar for sure!Tell us a little bit about yourself (family, job, sports, interests, etc.) Married to the best Man on the planet and it will be 20 years this September! We have three wonderful daughters (Abby, Lolo, and Chloe) , and I feel they should start paying me for my wonderful Uber service (I did sign up to be a driver once by accident). I grew up in T-town (Topeka) and played basketball and volleyball up through high school until I annoyed my coaches enough they benched me and I quit. I graduated from K-State with a degree in education and a Masters in Elementary and Secondary Counseling. I taught middle school for three years in Topeka before moving to Colorado. There I taught Middle school for 5 years and at the Alternative High School for 4 years before I RETIRED! Now I have the best job in the world, taking care of my kids and husband and being at the gym 3-hours a day (again, why I am not better at this CrossFit thing?).

What was your workout routine before CrossFit? generally spent time doing Lifetime fitness classes, running, and skiing. I also played golf with Tyler whenever he wasn’t making fun of my swing. What did you think after your first CrossFit workout? I loved it and was hooked from the very beginning. It is the only thing I have been doing ever since. What were your goals when joining CrossFit? Have you achieved any of those goals? I didn’t have goals starting, just wanted to stay in shape. Since then, pull-ups have become my nemesis and my goal. I think everyone in the gym has helped me at one point or another trying to get me to my goal – slowly but surely. Has CrossFit affected your life outside the gym? I’ve met some great people through Crossfit and the social interaction is phenomenal. It is like an accountability club where we are all helping each other; whether it is helping to encourage them through a workout, sharing of nutrition and health ideas, or a night on the town, it all starts here at 913.

Do you have any other special memories/ achievements during your time here? I was the reigning Beer Pong Champion for a year and even beat TJ and Brady! Other than that I’ve done a couple competitions with my Hubby and others at the Gym. What advice would you give to a newbie just joining CrossFit 913? I started when I was 40 years old so it is never too late. Have fun and keep your mind open. CrossFit is like having a personal trainer at every workout and great coaches and the community are what keeps me coming back day after day. Something you might not know about me is? I completed the Steamboat Springs Half-Marathon in 2010 and I was the 8th Grade Free Throw Champion and even made it to the finals in Great Bend!
