May Male Athlete Spotlight - Joe Stuart

When did you start CrossFitting? Who/what got you started?I started at CF913 in April of 2014. My wife and I had just moved back to KC from Alaska and my sister and bro-in law, Mary and Tyler Seals, talked me in to going. What is your favorite/least favorite WOD?My favorite WOD’s are AMRAP’s and my least favorite are anything for time – I worry that I may never finish..haha.What is your favorite/least favorite movement? My favorite movements are push press, power cleans, and deadlifts. My least favorite are wall balls, AB, running, and snatches.Tell us a little bit about yourself (family, job, sports, interests, etc.)This month will be my 16 year anniversary with my wonderful wife Jill! I grew up in Topeka, and graduated from Kansas State University with a degree in Hotel/Restaurant Management and have been in hotel management ever since. My work has taken us to several different cities from the Lake of the Ozarks, Lexington, KY, Steamboat Springs, and Denver, CO and Anchorage, AK. I currently work for Marriott at the Sheraton Overland Park. I enjoy everything K-State, and my wife and I try to travel as much as possible.

What was your workout routine before CrossFit?In Alaska I did nothing but drink beer for a year, but before that I did a little bit of everything from 24 hour fitness, p90x, to just lifting on my own. Those routines got very boring so it was hard to stick with them. What did you think after your first CrossFit workout? That I may never walk again! What were your goals when joining CrossFit? Have you achieved any of those goals?First was to get arms as big as Mary’s. And second was to get back in shape, lose some weight and adopt a healthier lifestyle. My first year I lost 20 lbs. Has CrossFit affected your life outside the gym?Yes – it has not only improved my health, but I have met some great people!

Do you have any other special memories/ achievements during your time here?I would have to say getting my first pull-up. I remember my very first workout and we were doing pull-ups and I could barely do one with the band. It was very rewarding to see the hard work pay off. What advice would you give to a newbie just joining CrossFit 913?Scale as needed. There were many times where I thought I would never make it but everyone is so supportive – just keep showing up. Something you might not know about me is?When I lived in Colorado I hiked three 14er’s – one being Mt Elbert, the highest peak in Colorado.
