March Male Athlete Spotlight - Carlos Barboza

When did you start CrossFitting? Who/what got you started?I started in December 2014, I was looking to get back in shape after a time loving my couch and finding out that my cholesterol and blood pressure was in the red zone, so decided to check on title boxing across the street and they were close and walk over to the dry-cleaning to pick my clothes and stumbled upon Crossfit 913. Anthony explained the whole thing and kind of liked the idea of working out in a group, doing different workouts every day and having a coach. What is your favorite/least favorite WOD?For a while didn't have a favorite workout since I was always trying to catch up with everyone they all were amazing but I think I enjoy more the "For Time" workouts and weightlifting programs more than EMOM's. I love to do the long and exhausting workouts like Murph. My least favorite WOD can be anything where I have to go very fast because my gas goes out very quickly. What is your favorite/least favorite movement?I love snatches, cleans, and jerks anything with weight but I don't like pull-ups since my left shoulder dislocates and I always have that fear.

Tell us a little bit about yourself (family, job, sports, interests, etc.) I'm from Venezuela, reborn North American (Kansan) 21 years ago, I'm a very happy person and willing to help anyone. have a Daughter (Isabella) who came for a while to 913. I'm engaged to Sue Zelaya, who I am planning to marry her on February 30th. I don't know the year yet TBA. I own a professional cleaning services providing residential and commercial cleaning and restoring services. I like pretty much any sport but more for soccer, baseball and basketball, GO Chiefs! I hope we can enjoy an NBA team soon. I am always on the go and learning new skills is my motto. What was your workout routine before CrossFit?I practiced traditional Okinawan Goju Ryu Karate-Do for more than 20 years in Venezuela and did it again here. My sensei (teacher) left to China and I decide to join Life Time to find myself doing more karate exercises and some weightlifting but without a goal. What did you think after your first CrossFit workout?I was pumped, I thought I was going to die on the spot. I always regret not recording it, it would of be fun to watch again (maybe an idea for newbies). TJ told me I could work out as many times a day if I wanted, that there were guys that did it twice a day and I said to myself "holy macaroni and I could finish this one" got to make it every day at least Lol.What were your goals when joining CrossFit? Have you achieved any of those goals?Lose some weight and lower my cholesterol were my main goals and after a month I was on track, after that it's being able to conquer some of the lifts and conditioning challenges.

Has CrossFit affected your life outside the gym?Yes, I can't walk straight some times or get up quickly from being seated at the table but always wanted to go and get some more, is indescribable, but ones you pass the door all aches and pains from last workout don't matter anymore and kind of goes away! I have more energy throughout the day and I'm not worried about what I eat as much because I know I will burn it next time at the gym... that's probably why I am still packing some pounds on my belly.Do you have any other special memories/ achievements during your time here? The friendly and competitive environment makes it special every day. I have achieved so many personal goals that I can't count, but probably the most especial is learning how to get better every day because every day is different and something new comes out. ( That aha moment )What advice would you give to a newbie just joining CrossFit 913?Take it easy if you haven't been active for a while but always looking to show up more frequently. But if you can handle yourself just make sure your ego checks out at the door, if anything just ask the coach they know better they have probably been there before. I'm confident in the knowledge of all the staff at 913.Something you might not know about me is?I went to theology school wanted to become a pastor but got divorce and plans changed and had a change of plans. Once or twice a year like collect use clothes, shoes, and accessories to send to Venezuela to help with a church charity. I like to go fast in cars or on motorcycles, I'm an adrenaline junkie when it comes to engines.
