June Male Athlete Spotlight - Sam Wells

When did you start CrossFitting? Who/what got you started?I started Crossfit in July of 2017, after I finished playing college football. I was looking for a way to get back into working out with other people and for a new physical challenge. What is your favorite/least favorite WOD?I don’t have a specific WOD that is my favorite, but I love chippers and anything that is especially long and miserable. Barbells are always good too! My least favorite would be anything that includes large sets of SHSPU. What is your favorite/least favorite movement?I really enjoy the squat snatch. I used to be terrible at them when I started Crossfit and I like how technical they are. For me it took a lot of mobility work to get better at them. My least favorite is partner deadlifts… I found this out recently training for Granite Games. Tell us a little bit about yourself (family, job, sports, interests, etc.) I have an amazing and beautiful wife in Sidney! We have an awesome dog named Gus that we got together in college at UNT. I have my own digital marketing agency called Big Creek Creative. Hunting, archery, fishing and Jiu Jitsu are some of my favorites. I also enjoy camping, photography and cooking!

What was your workout routine before CrossFit? Before Crossfit I had always worked out in a team atmosphere. I played sports my whole life so exercise was never a choice for me, but always a necessary thing to do. After my two knee surgeries I had a lot of rehab, but when I healed up I started to get into running and continued to do the same lifting routines I had done in football. What did you think after your first CrossFit workout? My first Crossfit workout was 5 rounds for time of 15 OH Squats and a 400M run. I never knew a 95lb. barbell could feel so heavy and I had no where near the mobility it took to overhead squat properly. It was a humbling experience for me, but it made me excited to get better! What were your goals when joining CrossFit? Have you achieved any of those goals? My goals were to achieve a higher level of fitness than I ever had before and to get back the confidence I had in myself before getting hurt in football. I have achieved both of those things, but the higher level of fitness is something I get to chase everyday now! Has CrossFit affected your life outside the gym?It has for sure, my diet being the most obvious area. When I was in college I ate everything I could get my hands on to maintain weight for football. Now I have a much better understanding of how different food effect my body. Life is just better when you exercise and push yourself daily.

Do you have any other special memories/ achievements during your time here?I’ve hit just about every PR I have to my name here at 913. I enjoyed competing at the in house competitions, Battle of the Brave and I am looking forward to Granite Games with Connor and Anthony. What advice would you give to a newbie just joining CrossFit 913? GET AFTER IT. This place and the people here are awesome. You can achive anything you want here. Something you might not know about me is? I am pretty transparent, but I would love to be the next Bobby Flay on the Food Network.
