April Male Athlete Spotlight - Reed Erickson

When did you start CrossFitting? Who/what got you started?I started Crossfit in Gainesville Florida when I worked for the Florida Gators. I was at the time running marathons, and was looking for a way to build up some strength. At the time my friend and colleague Emily had started at Crossfit Gainesville – and I got hooked. I started on a “golden-ticket” challenge where if you came for a week – they gave you your first month free… and I’ve been still going this many years later. What is your favorite/least favorite WOD?I’ve always loved the Murph wod. A combination of things that are really hard for me (push-ups & pull-ups) and that I really enjoy (running). What is your favorite/least favorite movement?Clean and Jerk, by far my favorite. Push-Ups are where I always need the most work.

Tell us a little bit about yourself (family, job, sports, interests, etc.)I live in Overland Park with soon-to-be Husband Danny Z, and our two kindergartners Liam & Lleyton. I describe myself as high-energy and with an endless curiosity for the world. On some rainy days, I’ll have Danny drop me off at a random storm-water retention pond when he is running an errand so I can watch the water over-flow. In my spare time I automated our entire house… much to the family’s amusement or dismay (depends on whether it is working).I found my way to Kansas City to work as the Vice-President of a Sports Production company, and now work for Creative Technology in Las Vegas where we assemble the presentation tech (display, lighting, audio) for the Super-Bowl, CrossFit Games, product-launches.What was your workout routine before CrossFit?I ran stadium-stairs and the beaches of Florida. Every Sunday morning I would pick a different beach and run as close to the sand as my feet could handle. What did you think after your first CrossFit workout?I loved it. 100 wallballs, plus some other adventures… I was very sore the next day.

What were your goals when joining CrossFit? Have you achieved any of those goals?Look better naked…. Ask Danny if I’ve achieved that. Has CrossFit affected your life outside the gym?I learned to fail at CrossFit. It was really freeing to realize that I absolutely didn’t know what I was doing – and that it was ok. That plus a desire and willingness to accept coaching has changed a lot of my life. When I’m worked out – I feel so much better, I sleep better, and want to eat better. Especially with the COVID quarantine – I really miss coming to the gym, turning off my phone, and working out for one solid hour – even when I’m the last one done.Do you have any other special memories/ achievements during your time here?I love the people, there are those moments where just working on something with someone / next to someone is powerful. Many of my greatest friends come from my various CrossFit gyms over the years. My mom always reminds me: “You become the 5 people you spend the most time with, so pick them wisely.” I find that CrossFit is a place where you can greatly increase the odds of finding great, dedicated, hard-working, honest, kind, compassionate, focused, successful people. What advice would you give to a newbie just joining CrossFit 913?Do the work.Don’t get intimidated.Everyone is in their own world during a workout, so stressing about Alex Harrelson’s Abs is a waste of your time. Don’t be intimidated by the super-tough guys. They all had a first-day just like you.
