April Member Spotlight - Tania Pittel

When did you start CrossFitting? Who/what got you started?I started CrossFit in October 2016. I was wanting to join a CrossFit gym but was planning to wait until January. I saw an ad for a 6 week challenge in my Facebook feed and decided I should just go for it. What is your favorite/least favorite WOD?Favorite is anything with cardio and especially running since that is actually something I can do without feeling like I’m going to die. I also like the EMOM. Least favorite is anything longer than 20 minutes and the assault bike. What is your favorite/least favorite movement? My favorite movement is back or front squats and anything cardio. Least favorite is overhead squats because I have poor mobility and just can’t get the form quite yet. Tell us a little bit about yourself (family, job, sports, interests, etc.) I am from Beatrice, Nebraska. I got a Bachelor’s in biology from Nebraska Wesleyan, Bachelor’s in nursing at Nebraska Methodist and Family Nurse Practitioner at UMKC. I am a nurse practitioner and work for Kansas City general and Vascular surgery. I have been married for 9 years to my husband Brian and I have 2 children (Gavin 3 ½ and Adalyn 17 months). We also have a yorkie named Riley. I played soccer and softball in high school.

What was your workout routine before CrossFit?I ran mostly. Prior to joining I had just finished the Kansas City half marathon. I have run a couple of marathons and still run when I’m able. I have also done Title boxing, P90x and some random lifting in the past. What did you think after your first CrossFit workout?I was hooked. I liked the variety and the challenge of something new every time. What were your goals when joining CrossFit? Have you achieved any of those goals? My goals were to get into a routine, become stronger and increase my mobility. Yes I have...I come at least 5 days a week and have increased my strength a great deal. I have a ways to go on the mobility but it has come a long ways since my first day! I have also made improvements in my body composition and have lost some inches since starting. Has CrossFit affected your life outside the gym?Yes definitely. When I first started I switched to a paleo diet and now am doing the RP diet. I have a much healthier lifestyle and more energy even though I’m getting up at 4:30. I have met some really great people and look forward to going to the gym. Do you have any other special memories/ achievements during your time here?I completed my first CrossFit Open this year. I had to scale most of the WODs but was able to do a couple Rx. Since starting the RP diet in January I have made several PRs. I have also learned to do handstands. Still working on the HSPUs though. What advice would you give to a newbie just joining CrossFit 913?Don’t be intimidated to try it out. All of the members are very supportive and inviting to newbies. Even the 5:15 am class! Stick with it! Don’t be too hard on yourself and know that improvements come with time. Don’t compare your strength to anyone else. Something you might not know about me is?I’m a very competitive person even though I don’t make it known and may push myself a little more than necessary.
