August Female Member Spotlight - Annie Shelton

When did you start Cross Fitting? Who/what got you started?I started Crossfit May 2015 during the final months of my first year of Health System Pharmacy Administration Residency training in Milwaukee. My roommate and dear friend had taken up Crossfit and been smashing workouts for the past 6 months when she invited me to step away from work for a Saturday morning and join her for a partner WOD at Badger Crossfit. Come, she said. It will be fun, she said.Bright and early that morning I walked into a what appeared to be abandoned warehouse- soon to be watching team ‘warm up’ they called it. One partner on the ground in a plank and the other jumping over them (burpee-partner jump overs) I remember at that moment thinking “what in thee…..”(what’s going on in here) also, this shit is crazy. After that day at Badger-feeling the heat of the workout, meeting the members of the community, listening and connecting with their on-boarding stories- I was hooked, signed up for my on-boarding course and passed through to the ‘big-gym’ in no time.Upon accepting my role with The University of Kansas Health System I knew that step one would be – find a Crossfit gym. This would be how I would begin to build a network/a family in Kansas City. Crossfit 913 was the second gym that I demoed - it felt like home- the rest is history. What is your favorite/least favorite WOD?Favorite WOD- I really like EMOMs (just when you think you’re going down, ROTATE!)Least favorite WOD- 17.1 was…. memorableWhat is your favorite/least favorite movement?Favorite movement – box jumps or wall ballsLeast favorite movement- burpeesTell us a little bit about yourself (family, job, sports, interests, etc.)I’m originally from Iowa City (where my parents still reside). I’m the middle child of three- super close with my older brother Ryland (professional vocal coach/actor/artist song writer in LA) and younger sister Audrey (Senior Human Resources Director for a company based out of St. Louis). I spend my work days providing pharmacy solutions for the University of Kansas Health System’s Clinics as the Health System’s Pharmacy Operations Manager and enjoy being surrounded by friends and family in my free time-food, drink, partaking in new experiences with others.

What was your workout routine before CrossFit?Basketball, volleyball, and softball prior to high school. In high school, I was a cheerleader for wrestling and basketball (cheerleading is a sport). In the later years, I began kickboxing (contact was short lived -ouch) but then transitioned into a group fitness junkie; Les Mills (body combat, body pump, body attack) also would dabble in indoor spin classes. What did you think after your first CrossFit workout?Well, that just happened. What were your goals when joining CrossFit? Have you achieved any of those goals?I joined Crossfit as a fresh way of investing in myself-mentally and physically. My goals at that time were to have something that I looked forward to- to pull me away from the hospital for a couple of hours a day, to meet some new people that had similar interests, and blast some of those pharmacy school/residency lbs.I have achieved so much more than what I set out to accomplish by joining Crossfit.Has CrossFit affected your life outside the gym?I don’t see an aspect of my life that has been unaffected by my affiliation with Crossfit. I am more driven, focused, a better more committed friend/daughter/sibling- all due in part to the support and peace of mind that is gained through Crossfit (more specifically our community at Crossfit 913)Do you have any other special memories/ achievements during your time here?Often the best part of my day is on the floor with my 913 family. The friendly competition has enabled me to exceed lift capacities that I never imagined possible.

What advice would you give to a newbie just joining CrossFit 913?Be patient. Yes, you can and you will. When you start to get comfortable-throw the extra 2.5s on-you’re stronger than you think you are.Thank you Crossfit 913 for highlighting me as athlete of the month, I am truly honored!
