August Male Member Spotlight - Lee Scherman

When did you start CrossFitting? Who/what got you started?I started CrossFit about 3 years ago. A friend from my childhood was big into CrossFit and would post pictures on Facebook. I was impressed with the results she was getting. I had recently changed jobs and was sitting in a cubicle most of the time and gaining weight quickly. I started watching YouTube videos about CrossFit and thought the workouts and movements looked awesome. Why not turn fitness into a sport? So I looked for gyms in the area. My first WOD was a ridiculous Saturday workout, but I was hooked. Decided I would try another gym because first workout is free. I tried CrossFit 913, pulled up the first day to an ambulance outside the gym and thought “oh great it's one of the injury prone gyms,” gave it a try anyways and instantly trusted the coaches so the rest is history. Thanks Coach Ant!What is your favorite/least favorite WOD?My favorite WOD is Randy. The first time I did it was during a competition at CrossFit 913. We did the WOD outside of the old gym. I killed it! It was one of the first WODs I was able to go BEASTMODE on. My least favorite WOD is all 21 min EMOMs.What is your favorite/least favorite movement? My favorite movement is Snatch. I like how technical the movement is and how it feels to hit a successful lift. Least favorite is burpees, burpee box jumps, target burpees! However, give me some burpees over the bar and I am all in!Tell us a little bit about yourself (family, job, sports, interests, etc.)I enjoy playing multiple sports outside of the gym. These include volleyball, softball, soccer, and ultimate frisbee. also like to mountain bike and started snowboarding two winters ago. I grew up on a small farm just north of Paola. I mostly helped with our cow-calf operation. I graduated from K—State Salina with degrees in engineering technology and technology management.

What was your workout routine before CrossFit?During college I went to several different regular gyms. I would do some running, lifting, and basketball. I stayed healthy, but wasn't getting stronger. Once I moved to KC I worked out at my apartments fitness center where any variety in workouts disappeared. Warm up on the treadmill do the same dumbbell exercises and then back to the treadmill. No gainz just excess weight. What did you think after your first CrossFit workout? My first WOD was some ridiculous partner WOD. I was thrown into it with another newbie. We had to ask for coaching on several of the movements and only completed 3/4th of the WOD. As rough as it was I was still hooked, just knew I needed more coaching. What were your goals when joining CrossFit? Have you achieved any of those goals?First goal was to be the next Rich Froning only taller and more jacked. I managed the taller. Realistic goals were to get stronger, increase athletic ability, and make new friends. I have been successful in these goals and continue to improve on them everyday.

Has CrossFit affected your life outside the gym?My increased athletic ability has helped with the all the sports I like to play outside of the gym. I feel healthier and more mobile now than I did at the Age of 25.Do you have any other special memories/ achievements during your time here?My best memories come from time spent outside of the gym with members/friends of CrossFit 913. They range from spontaneous meals after the workout, nights out on the town, to days spent poolside. I have made a great group of friends and appreciate every member of the community. What advice would you give to a newbie just joining CrossFit 913?Stick with it and be consistent. You will be incredibly sore, but getting back to the gym is the best thing for it. You will get use to being sore.Something you might not know about me is?I am a bit of an adrenaline junkie. I have been skydiving a couple times. I would like to bungee jump, rock climb, and zip line. If it's active I am game to participate.
