December Female Athlete Spotlight - Nikki Anthony

When did you start CrossFitting? Who/what got you started?I started CrossFitting in February of 2016. I was tired of working out alone and my boyfriend at the time (now husband) Ian recommended Crossfit. He told me it would be a good way for me to stay competitive in a more team atmosphere. What is your favorite/least favorite WOD?Favorite wod HANDS DOWN DT!!! Least favorite wod would be KarenWhat is your favorite/least favorite movement?Favorite movement is almost anything involving a barbell and least favorite movement would be wallballs.

Tell us a little bit about yourself (family, job, sports, interests, etc.)I born and raised in Oklahoma and graduated from the University of Oklahoma (Boomer). I met my husband in Oklahoma where he was a Golf Professional. We were married in Jamaica in 2017 and then he accepted a Head Professional job at Canyon Farms Golf Club just one week after our wedding. We currently live in downtown old Overland Park with our two Labradors Jack and Hazel. What was your workout routine before CrossFit?Before Crossfit I was a runner and thought I wanted to be “skinny”. After playing softball my entire life I decided being a runner wasn’t ideal for the type of person I am. I knew I needed an atmosphere that was motivating but didn’t know I’d come to find that CrossFit provided much more then that. What did you think after your first CrossFit workout? After my first CrossFit workout I was thinking “I can do this and can’t wait to come back tomorrow.”What were your goals when joining CrossFit? Have you achieved any of those goals? My goals when I started were very simple, to always work hard and keep improving. I’m very happy because I’ve learned to do things I never thought I would be able to do. I was so scared to go upside down that it took me over a year to go upside down and another two years to get strong enough to hspu.

Has CrossFit affected your life outside the gym?Crossfit has definitely impacted my life outside of the gym in a positive way. I met my very best friends at CrossFit.Do you have any other special memories/ achievements during your time here?I’ve had an amazing two years at 913, I never thought I’d be able to hit the weightlifting goals I’ve set for myself and I continue to surprise myself. Everyone of the coaches has spent so much time helping me with my lifting and I’m very thankful for the genuine support. I also would have never thought I’d meet two girls as crazy as me to think we could do two-a-day’s for two months and qualify for a competition like Wodapalooza but we did it!What advice would you give to a newbie just joining CrossFit 913?I would tell a newbie to not be hard on yourself and never compare yourself to others. We are all different types of athletes and that’s what makes us unique. I’d also say celebrate your accomplishments even if it seems small it’s never too small to be proud of yourself. It took me two years to learn double unders, three years to get my first handstand push-up and four years to learn bar muscle ups. The only reason I never stopped trying was because I knew if I worked hard enough and was willing to be coachable then it would happen!Something you might not know about me is?Something you might not know about me is that I’m a huge Taylor Swift fan, obsessed with theme parties and a huge believer that whales shouldn’t be in captivity!
