February Female Athlete Spotlight - Bonnie Buckley

When did you start CrossFitting? Who/what got you started?I started Crossfitting in October of 2016. A friend of mine told me about CF913 she unfortunately doesn't come anymore but I think I kind of like it so I'm still plugging away!!What is your favorite/least favorite WOD?

I don't know if I have a favorite or a least favorite wod they all have their challenges. I just love the feeling of getting through a workout and feeling like I accomplished something. I don't Love the Assault Bike but I am getting better at it!

What is your favorite/least favorite movement?I guess I must be a class queen because I have always loved doing fitness classes. I have tried them all over the years aerobics, Kick boxing, cardio pump, Pilates, Yoga, Body Lab, Bar Method and even Orange Theory. I like to show up, you tell me what to do and get a good workout in. I think being in a class is motivating because when I want to quit I can't. If you look around and everyone else is still going you feel like you have too as well??!! I had never ever worked out with a bar or big heavy weights so it was super intimidating when TJ made me join the big class. All the people picking up and dropping loud heavy weights was kind of annoying at first but now I find it a little endearing! I feel like if I pick something up I need to be able to set it back down nicely and quietly, as I get stronger and am lifting heavier my opinion on this will most likely change. :)Tell us a little bit about yourself (family, job, sports, interests, etc.)I am married with two beautiful children Alexis and Ryan. I worked for Aventis Pharma for 11 years and decided I wanted out of big corporate America so I ventured out and started my own little business Glow Sunfree Tans and Lashes. My product is all Natural and Organic ingredients so it is not bad for the skin, has no smell and is never orange. I custom blend you color and It really is beautiful! I have built my business on referrals and have been super blessed with awesome clients. Last year was my busiest year yet!

What was your workout routine before CrossFit?When I joined Crossfit 913 I wanted to work on mobility and build some muscle. Two years before I joined I was in a horrible car accident that they told me I was lucky to survive. I went through three surgeries, I couldn't walk for 2 months, I was in a cast for 6 months I was pretty broken up. Its taken a long time and some hard work but I am feeling and moving much better thanks to Crossfit. Upper body mobility is still super challenging but I am getting more flexible with every month and it is so cool!! I am not the heaviest lifter usually I am the lightest but I am just happy to be there working hard and getting stronger everyday. What did you think after your first CrossFit workout? After my first workout I was so sore and I think we used the bar only for squats, it may have been a training bar at that! I came twice a week because I was too sore then three times then four times a week and now I try to make it five when I can!! It was intimidating but I found TJ super funny, full of knowledge and patient so I kept coming. As I met the other coaches I soon learned they all have different qualities that make them unique and helpful. They all have ideas of ways to help you and make you better. Its really a fun place to be.What were your goals when joining CrossFit? Have you achieved any of those goals? My goals were to build some muscle as I had lost a lot and only did Pilates and Yoga type stuff while rebuilding and healing my body from the injuries I had. I have not lost any weight in fact I've gained about 10 pounds but I think its muscle because I've lost inches on all parts of my body, well except my calves. I just wanted to feel strong again and athletic as I always had been. I have a lot of work to do but yes I'm making progress.Has CrossFit affected your life outside the gym?Yes Crossfit has affected my life outside the gym in silly ways but really cool ways too. I can carry heavy stuff much easier now. I move around heavy furniture in the house BY MYSELF, and try to carry all the groceries in one trip on both arms. I find myself sprinting up the stairs to switch over laundry, sleeping better, it helps me focus when I have to sit in my chair for work. It makes me want to eat better so I can perform better in class.

Do you have any other special memories/ achievements during your time here? The best memories I have is all the laughing that we do in class. I don't think a day goes by when we don't laugh at least once in class or when I read funny posts online. Its serious but light all at the same time. Laughter is the best medicine and heals all! I love how everyone embraces each other and supports each other and pushes you to do your best, whatever that may be.What advice would you give to a newbie just joining CrossFit 913?Newbies, don't give up, keep coming, and don't quit trying. You can do it!Something you might not know about me is?Something you might not know about me, I am the next to the oldest of 8 children, I grew up on a farm with 5 brothers so I can shoot guns, ride motorcycles, drive tractors, work a chainsaw and now lift heavy things all while being girly at the same time.
