A Gym for Out of Shape Beginners in South Overland Park

If you are looking for a gym for out of shape beginners, KSAC in South Overland Park was set up for people who are not there yet. Every class is led by a coach, and every workout can be scaled to what you can do today. You do not have to get fit before you walk in. Your first 2 classes are free, so you can see the place for yourself before you decide anything.

Below: why "get fit first" is the wrong order, what scaling really means, how to pick your first class, and how to start small when your week is already full.

Why getting fit first is the wrong order

Plenty of people tell themselves they will join a gym once they have lost some weight, built some stamina, or put in a few weeks of walking. It sounds sensible. The problem is that the gym is where the stamina comes from.

At KSAC, the most common member is a busy parent between 25 and 50. They do not have a lot of free time. They still want to be in shape, work hard and live in a healthy way. Wanting that is the entry requirement. Already having it is not.

Our footer says it plainly: the hardest step is always the first step. We would rather you took it in a coached class than alone at 9pm with a video and a sore back.

What "scaled" means when you are starting from scratch

Scaling means a coach changes the weight, shortens the range of motion or swaps the movement so the workout fits your body today. It is the main reason a new person and a long-time member can both get a real workout out of the same class.

Scaling does not make a workout easy. It makes it yours. You will still get tired, and that is the work. What changes is that the hard part is the effort, not a movement your body is not ready for.

Members mention this in their reviews. Coaches check form, scale movements and give options when an injury gets in the way. If something hurts, or you are nervous about a certain movement, tell your coach. If you have not exercised in years or you have a health condition, check with your doctor before your first class.

CrossFit or SWEAT: picking your first class

KSAC has two group classes to start in, and both are coached.

CrossFit. KSAC is a CrossFit affiliate. The CrossFit classes are scaled for every level, so a first-timer is not expected to match anyone else's weights.

SWEAT Bootcamp. Think of it as functional fitness for all levels. Squats and heavy lifts are part of the day. The conditioning part, the hard-breathing finish, is done without barbells. If the barbell is the thing that worries you, the SWEAT Bootcamp page is a good place to look first.

Neither one is a gentle stretch class. Both are work, fitted to you. If you cannot decide, you have two free classes. Try one, then the other, and see which one you would come back to.

Starting small when your week is already full

Pick a number of days you can keep, not the number you wish you could. For many people coming back after a long break, two or three days a week is a realistic place to begin. A plan you keep in week six beats a bigger plan you drop in week two.

Choose class times that fit around work and school pickup, and expect to be sore for a while. A rest day is part of the plan, not a lapse.

If your schedule is the real obstacle, our guide to balancing parenthood and fitness has five steps for fitting training into a week that keeps changing.

What members say about walking in the first time

The nervous part for most beginners is not the workout. It is the room. Members write about this more than almost anything else.

One Yelp reviewer wrote: "The minute you walk in the door, you're unconditionally welcomed and supported just as you are." Another review said KSAC is "so much more than a gym; it's a family." A member on GymHappy put it this way: "No matter the season of life you're in, KSAC moves with you."

That fits how the owner describes the place: "We are just real and honest. We never want to be deceitful or pushy." If a coach tells you a movement needs work, it is because it does. If you need to scale it back, nobody will make you feel bad about it.

Come twice before you decide

Two classes cost nothing, and no contract is required if you stay. Book your 2 free classes and make the call afterward.

KSAC is at 14875 Metcalf Ave in South Overland Park. The Overland Park location page has directions.

Questions people ask before their first class

Do I need to be in shape before I join KSAC?

No. At KSAC, wanting to get in shape is enough to start. Coaches scale each workout to what you can do today, and you can take 2 classes free before deciding anything.

What if I can't do a movement in class?

At KSAC, a coach can scale the movement by lowering the weight, shortening the range of motion or swapping in a different movement. Members also say coaches give modifications around injuries.

What do EMOM and AMRAP mean?

EMOM means every minute on the minute: a task starts at the top of each minute. AMRAP means as many rounds or reps as possible before time runs out. They are two ways of setting up a workout, and neither needs to be learned before your first class.

Do I have to sign a contract at KSAC?

No. KSAC does not require contracts. A lower rate is available if you choose a 3- or 6-month commitment, but the choice is yours.

Where is KSAC, and who drives in?

KSAC is at 14875 Metcalf Ave in South Overland Park, Kansas 66223. Members make the drive from Louisburg, Stilwell, Olathe, Lenexa, Leawood, Prairie Village and South Kansas City, as well as Overland Park itself.
